Men's Club Basketball Splits Series with Chico State University
Last Saturday Saint Mary's hosted the Chico Wildcats for a two game battle. This past February, the Gaels traveled to Chico for their first games of the season. Saint Mary's lost the first game, but came back in the second game to take the win. This laid a foundation for an exciting rematch.
The first game began with Saint Mary's coming in fast and strong, constantly berating the Wildcats with their authoritative offense. John Rathbun '26 scored an effortless three pointer to get the Gael momentum going.
The Gaels seemed to have been on fire, as they continued to score point after point. Guilherme Mijas '25 conducted these flaming plays to keep Saint Mary's in the lead throughout the duration of this game. This blazing energy from the Gaels seemed to have tired out the Wildcats. Saint Mary's won 51-40.
The Wildcats rejuvenated and came back for revenge in this second game. Their offense found weaknesses in the Gael defense. The only stability in both these matches was Javier Gros Jr. '27. Gros Jr. was an absolute savage with the ball, as he was the main point contributor.
Our men fought hard until the end, but despite their very best efforts, the concluding results came up short. The Gaels lost 39-43.
This win and loss now puts Saint Mary's at an overall record of 5-3-0. Their next game will be on Saturday March 22nd. They will be facing Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. Be sure to send your support to our Gaels!
