PREVIEW: Gaels Set for Round of 8 Clash with Arizona
By AJ Clement '26, Club Sports Writer
Moraga, California —On Saturday, The Saint Mary's Gaels (12-1-0) will host the University of Arizona Wildcats (10-3-0) in a West Region Round of 8 Battle. The winner of this match will face the winner of Cal/BYU in the West Regional Championship.
Historically, the Gaels have dominated the Wildcats head-to-head, winning all three matches the teams have played since 2024, including the most recent 68-15 victory in January. That matchup showcased Saint Mary's at its most complete, combining clinical attacking with disciplined defense. After withstanding early pressure, the Gaels seized control through strong territorial play, forced turnovers, and capitalized on mistakes to build a commanding lead. Even as the game progressed, their defensive organization and depth ensured Arizona never found sustained momentum.
Arizona however, has found consistent form since that defeat, winning six of their last 7 matches. Their only loss in that stretch came against No. 1 Cal in a tight 57–51 contest, a result that demonstrated their ability to compete with top-tier opposition. The Wildcats bring a physical forward pack and an aggressive approach, and will look to challenge Saint Mary's early, just like they did in the previous meeting.
For the Gaels, the formula remains clear. Their strength lies in their ability to disrupt opponents and create attacking opportunities. Defensively, Saint Mary's has shown the ability to respond with physical, organized tackling, while offensively, their balance and depth allow them to score from multiple areas on the field. When playing with tempo and discipline, the Gaels have proven difficult to contain.
Entering Saturday's matchup, Saint Mary's will be favored, not only because of past success against Arizona but due to the consistency and cohesion they have displayed throughout the season. If they can start fast, maintain discipline, and control possession, the Gaels will put themselves in a strong position to advance.
Kickoff is set for 1 PM at the Saint Mary's Stadium.
