By: Isabella Buoncristiani '28
The Men's Club Volleyball team participated in the two day NCCVL Championships. During these two days the Gaels played the University of the Pacific Tigers and the CSU Monterey Bay Otters.
Launching into their initial match against the Tigers, Andrew Carney '27 obtained a major block that shifted the momentum back into Saint Mary's favor. His strong swings made a consistent impact offensively, as his strategic attacks were vital in generating points for the Gaels. Libero Connor Cristobal '28 picked up this momentum shift and continuously added to it through making several key digs that kept the rallies alive. Closing out the first game, Dillon Rockwell '26 was an essential asset on defense. He was great at keeping many balls in play and preventing the Tigers from any further score attempts. This match concluded in a Gael victory, as they won 3-1.
Walking onto the court for their second match against undefeated CSU Monterey Bay, the Gaels embodied confidence and conviction. Logan Milestone '27 was an absolute brute at the net, recording multiple blocks, consistent attacks, and being versatile in both offense and defense. Following this up was Gus Varela '27 who bestowed effective serves that put pressure on the opposing Otters. Ryan Geissberger '28 swung in with crucial help on offense and well-timed sets that provided many scoring opportunities for the Gaels. Despite their best efforts, the Gaels did fall short, being defeated 1-3.
This group of hardworking men did an excellent job at maintaining their composure and staying focused when obstacles were thrown their way. They showed commendable resilience and fought hard until the last buzzer rang out. They remarkably finished third in the league, which marks the best finish in this program's history. This accomplishment is significant and is one that is meant to be celebrated. It reflects hard work, dedication, and improvement from the Gaels. Now, they will be turning their attention to getting their proper rest for Nationals this week. Taking the time to recover both physically and mentally is important, as it's best to ensure every teammate is healthy. The Gaels want to be as fully prepared as possible.
Nationals will be taking place in Kansas City from April 1st-5th. Saint Mary's will be competing against other top club teams in the country. Match times and specific opponents will be determined soon after the tournament bracket and schedule are released, so make sure to keep an eye out for that. Wish this amazing team the best of luck! Go Gaels.
