Women’s Club Basketball- A Positive Redirection
The Women's Club basketball team hosted Stanford this past weekend for a back to back match up. This Saint Mary's squad primarily consists of underclassmen who bring a vivacious energy to the team and are more than willing to learn from the remaining upperclassmen. The Gaels have a full roster this spring so they were anticipating getting back on the court to play the Cardinals.
The first game began with Saint Mary's adjusting quickly to Stanford's offensive pressure. In order to succeed at this, the Gaels implemented their new defense skills. Ayanna Williams '25 took the lead with this pursuit. Her defensive agility was top notch and she was able to keep Standford on their toes. Williams was also one of the foremost point contributors in this game.
The work that the Gaels put into this primary battle was intensely driven, but unfortunately this audacious effort came up short. The Cardinals won 55 to 30.
Chloe Aguilar '27 was a real showstopper during the second game. She racked up a total of four three pointers which made her the lead scorer overall for this match. Although Aguilar was a key factor to accumulating the bulk of the points scored, the Gaels trailed the Cardinals until the end of the game. The concluding score was 45-29.
Despite these losses, the Gaels are putting a positive step forward. They are planning to work on polishing their offensive chemistry on the court, as that was an element holding them back from success. They also intend to hone in on their free throwing skills and various rotations.
Their next home game will be this Friday, February 21st, at 5:30 pm in the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center. Be sure to come out and support our Gaels!
