Senior Day Showdown For The Gaels
By AJ Clement
Moraga, Calif. —The Saint Mary's Gaels closed out their regular season at home on sunny Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader against the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters and the Cal Maritime Keelhaulers. More than just another match day, the afternoon carried extra weight as the Gaels honored graduating seniors Ryleen Castro and Giaulale Ramos Quezada in their final home appearance.
Saint Mary's opened the day against Cal State Monterey Bay, grinding out a 20–10 win in a back-and-forth contest that tested both sides early. The Gaels found their rhythm through Chidera Animalu, who powered in two tries, consistently breaking through contact and setting the tone offensively. CSUMB answered with two tries of their own, keeping the pressure on and forcing Saint Mary's to stay disciplined on defense. Late in the match, Torrie Rapadas added a crucial try to give the Gaels breathing room and secure the 10-point victory.
With momentum on their side, Saint Mary's carried that energy into the second match against Cal Maritime, coming away with a 22–7 win. The Gaels wasted no time getting on the board, crossing over just two minutes in, followed shortly after with a try in the seventh minute, continuing a dominant afternoon performance. Cal Maritime responded with a try in the ninth minute and successfully converted, briefly tightening the score. But Saint Mary's stayed in control, with Daniela Jimenez converting to extend the lead and put the game out of reach.
While the scoreboard reflected a strong finish to the regular season, the day ultimately belonged to Ryleen Castro and Giaulale Ramos Quezada. Surrounded by teammates, family, and supporters, the two seniors were recognized for their contributions to the program both on the field and in shaping the team's culture.
