Women's Club Soccer Falls Short to UNR
By: Isabella Buoncristiani ‘28
The Women's Club Soccer team hosted the University of Nevada, Reno this past Saturday for their anticipated home opener. The Gaels were ready to get back out onto the field and play the game they know and love. In addition to their 2025-2026 season opener, the match was a "Pink Out" in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Sophia Villalobos '29 put on an exemplary performance for her debut on the field. She was quick, skilled, and determined, all traits that are deemed desirable by many on and off the field.
Returning senior goalkeeper Karminna Gaytan '26 didn't disappoint. Gaytan was able to secure numerous saves and block the Wolf Pack's scoring attempts.
The two players who deserve recognition in this game were Captains Peyton Shelby '26 and Malia McGrail '26. They both put in an incredible amount of effort despite being injured and dealing with fatigue. Trooping through these obstacles really highlights their impeccable leadership skills.
Despite the Gaels' best efforts, their ventures came up short. The final score of the match was 0-3. Saint Mary's displayed honorable sportsmanship as the Wolf Pack made aggressive attempts to hold our team back, but the Gaels kept their heads high. The ladies were persistent in their craft, fighting until the last whistle was blown.
In preparation for their next game, the Gaels are concentrating on improving their communication and taking more shots on goal. Next Sunday, the 12th, they will be facing the Seawolves at Sonoma State University. Kickoff starts at 2:00 PM that afternoon. Be sure to wish them luck!
